SEO News Bytes June 23, 2006 - How Do You Build Links For Google, Yahoo And MSN At The Same Time?

Google, Yahoo and MSN rates inbound link quality much differently. While Google gives higher ranking scores to websites with inbound links from “trusted” websites with a long history, Yahoo and MSN relies more on the sheer number of links in their ranking algorithms. The differences in inbound link quality and quantity to the top ranking websites for competitive terms can be very different between Google, Yahoo and MSN. In order to simplify the link building process we can use almost identical link building techniques for Yahoo and MSN, but Google needs a completely different approach.

Before adding even the first inbound link, you should consider these important questions first:

  1. Do you want to rank well on all three search engines or on Google only? You will need a slow and steady link building process on Google with mostly trusted one-way links while Yahoo and MSN will be happy with a couple of hundred, or thousand mostly unrelated links as long as the inbound anchor text is well optimized for the target keywords.
  2. Do you only care about getting high ranking on Yahoo and MSN?  If this is the case go for link quantity and care less about relevance. Use well optimized inbound link text targeting your main keywords.
  3. How much time you want to allow yourself to achieve the results? If you cant wait to make money with a new affiliate program you have just signed up for, you should target Yahoo and MSN only with fast link building. While a 4-6 month time frame may be sufficient to achieve a decent ranking on MSN and Yahoo, getting a top ranking on Google can take over a year or more.
  4. Is your website and affiliate site or a corporate flagship? If you are trying to create a lasting corporate presence on the web you can’t afford to engage in spammy link building. Add relevant inbound links slowly from trusted sites in your genre including top general directories such as DMOZ and niche trade directories.
  5. How long do you plan to keep the website? If your website will be used to make a quick buck with affiliate programs, than you can afford to make plenty of link building mistakes, otherwise stick with white hat SEO only.
  6. Do you need to show your website to a search engine audience that converts to buyers? If you are interested in high conversion rate, your best bet is MSN and Yahoo.

A steady slow link building process is needed to rank well on Google, while Yahoo and MSN mostly interested in the quantity of links pointing to your website and the age of the links matter a lot less. Please keep in mind, pursuing the fast link building track can get you penalized in Google in no time, even before your website has a chance to climb out of the Google sandbox.

The link building technique you use will depend entirely on how long you are willing to wait for the ranking results and how important a good Google ranking is to you. Generally speaking if you are only interested in getting high rankings on Yahoo and MSN you can move a lot faster adding inbound links.

Once you have decided on your target search engines and the time frame for building links, it’s time to get down to work.
